Take a long-term approach to short-stay audits

The Recovery Audit Contractor (RAC) demonstration project ended March 27, and providers are still absorbing lessons from the RAC evaluation report. Among other problems, the report highlights difficulties with medically unnecessary services or settings, which accounted for more than 40% of the $992.7 million in Medicare overpayments RACs uncovered during their pilot run.
