Encoder software used in hospital coding departments can lull coders into a false sense of security and can often lead to an inaccurate code, says Glenn Krauss, BBA, RHIA, CCS, CCS-P, CPUR, FCS, PCS, C-CDIS, an independent consultant based in Milton, WI. Encoder software does a good job simplifying and streamlining the code lookup process; however, the codes might not be clinically accurate, Krauss says.
