Name: Joe Rivet, CPC, CCS-P Title: Revenue Manager for the Department of Medicine, specializing in revenue enhancement, coding integrity, and compliance Facility: Henry Ford Health System Location: Detroit, MI
Q. How did you become interested in hospital compliance?
Joe Rivet: I started out in patient financial services as a registration clerk. Then I moved to the coding department as a data-entry clerk. Coding always seemed fascinating to me, so I moved into a coder position, and then became certified. From there, I moved to audit and compliance.
Q. What is one aspect of your position that you enjoy?
Joe Rivet: I enjoy the challenges and the constant changes.
Q. What is the biggest auditing challenge you face and why?
Joe Rivet: The biggest challenge to me is auditing an area (where I have a) weakness. Nobody has all the right answers, nor can one person know everything. Often times, people assume that because you are certified in coding, you must know all the answers. That's a huge myth.
Do you have any advice for new auditors?
Q. Joe Rivet: Do not be intimidated by senior auditors or coders. I believe that new auditors can bring fresh perspectives and different ideas to the table.
